Wirén, Dag  (1905-1986)

Wirén, DagConcentration, rhythmic vitality and pregnancy are the main features common to nearly all works by Dag Wirén, regardless of their character in other respects. While a lighter style, often entertaining in a neo-classical way, dominated his earlier production, his later works, from the middle of the 1940s and onwards, show an obvious deepening of aim and expression.

Chief among his earier works are the Violoncello Concerto (1936) and the Serenade for String Orchestra (1937), which has won an outstanding popularity in Sweden and is also frequently performed abroad. The 3rd Symphony (1944) and the Violin Concerto (1946) are important works marking his development, and qualitative high lights of his following writing are the 4th Symphony (1952) and the 4th String Quartet (1953). Later works of importance include a 5th Symphony (1964) as well as a 5th String Quartet (1970), Music for String Orchestra (1967), described by the critics as a late companion to the Serenade, although more astringent in style, a Wind Quintet (1971), and a Flute Concertino (1972).

Wiréns production, sifted with severe self-criticism and therefore sparsely published, is characterized by a conspicuous evenness in its artistic quality. It therefore deserves interest and attention in its entirety.
