Jörgen Dafgård

Shortly after receiving his diploma in composition the composer Jörgen Dafgård in 2000 was awarded first prize in a composition competition sponsored by the Swedish Radio and the Berwald Hall for his Veils for orchestra. Within a year Veils was performed at four well-attended concerts, first by the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and then by the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra.

In 2003 several millions of radio-listeners could hear Veils broadcast by the British Classic FM and the American NPR when Veils among a thousand contributions reached the top ten in the world’s allegedly leading composition competition Masterprize. Veils was performed by the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra under Sakari Oramo in 2008, and again in Berwaldhallen by the Swedish Radio SO in 2010 under the baton of Xian Zhang.

Dafgård has cooperated extensively with a number of orchestras. The Nordic Chamber Orchestra has among other works premiered his Sinfonia No 1 and most recently (in Autumn 2012) his sifonietta Esprit. After having performed several works by Dafgård, the Malmö Symphony Orchestra in 2011 premiered his Through Fire and Water for large orchestra, which was a big success with headlines like "New Smash Hit for Jörgen Dafgård".
Dafgård's clarinet quintet Whims and Wizardry, which in 2012 was premiered by ARD prize winner Sebastian Manz and a well-reputed international string quartet, was in Autumn 2013 nominated for the Swedish Music Publishers' Award as the best chamber work. In Autumn 2013 Dafgård's Mahler Revisited scored great success at the Nordic Music Days in Helsinki, performed by the Zagros Ensemble. At the same time Dafgård delivered his five movement saxophone quartet Moving and Touching to the Swedish saxophone quartet Rollin' Phones.

In 2013 Jörgen Dafgård was Composer of Spring at the Berwald Hall, where five of his works for orchestra were performed by the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. The culmination was a portrait concert with three longer works by Dafgård, including the premiere of the new clarinet concerto Caprism with Andreas Sundén as soloist.

Janury 2017 saw the premiere of Dafgård's Concerto for Soprano Saxophone with phenomenal Anders Paulsson as soloist with the Jönköping Sinfonietta under Johannes Gustavsson. The concerto was jointly commissioned with the Västerås Sinfonietta.

Jörgen Dafgård works as a free-lance composer. In 1999 he received his diploma in composition at the Malmö Academy of Music, where he had studied for Hans Gefors, Javier Alvarez, Hans Abrahamsen and Kent Olofsson, among others. Previously he had studied composition for Anders Nilsson and Johan Hammerth and taken a bachelor of arts in musicology.
A large part of Dafgård's production is published by Gehrmans Musikförlag. Volo for string orchestra is published by Edition Suecia. Recordings of For the Sleeping for viola and electronics, String Quartet I and Mahler Revisited are avaliable on CD.
