Call for greater diversity in choral music
Gehrmans Music Publishing launches a project for greater diversity and equality in choral music. Six works by female or non-binary composers will be chosen, published and presented in the series #swedishchoralmusic in 2022.
All female and non-binary composers active in Sweden are invited to register works for choir a cappella. Six pieces will be chosen for publication by a committee that includes Krista Audere, the 2021 winner of the world's most prestigious competition for young choral conductors, the Eric Ericson Award.
– Swedish choral music is world famous, says Krista Audere. Sweden also has a history of being one step ahead in gender equality issues. That means there are great opportunities to really make an impact, not least internationally. I look forward to enriching my repertoire with many exciting works by female or non-binary composers.
The project is a cooperation with the Swedish Society of Composers and has been made possible with the support from Musikförläggarna, the Swedish Music Publisher's Association.
– We are very happy and proud of this project, says Filiz Erat Edhlund, CEO of Gehrmans. We know that many artistic directors and choral conductors work actively for a better balance in the programming and repertoire. Together with the Swedish Society of Composers, we hope to inspire and influence the development towards greater diversity in the musical world.
